The Birth of a Candle Company

It was back in those seemingly distant pre-pandemic days of 2019 that my husband John and I began to take a keen interest in all things candle. We had recently completed a total renovation of a new house and were wanting to add those finishing touches to turn it into a home. We started looking at candles and home fragrance and that is when our obsession began…

I have always been more creative with a keen eye for aesthetics, whilst John’s talents lay more in the detail with his background in engineering. Whilst we loved some elements of the candles we could buy in the shops, we could never find the perfect balance of fragrance, burn quality, design and detailing. We went through so many candles before deciding that we could probably do it better ourselves.

What it takes to create the perfect candle

The Cain Candle company was then born and we went headlong into many months of extensive trialling, sourcing, experimenting, and testing. We quickly found out that although making a candle is relatively easy, making a great or near perfect candle is exceptionally difficult, it is both an art and a science, so we threw everything at it.

Every ingredient you add changes the characteristics and burn performance of the candle, so we sourced the best sustainable ingredients and developed tests that we ran time and again. We kept meticulous notes of the results from flame height to burn pool and fragrance throw etc. We measured the cooling curves of the candles at different ambient temperatures to perfect our hand pouring and ingredient blend.

We knew that we wanted to create a candle that was exacting in every detail and from these tests, we gradually edged closer to the perfect candle.  It became clear early on that we couldn’t use ‘off the shelf’ supplies to make the candle we wanted to produce.  We therefore invested in manufacturing to create perfectly fitting lids, hot foiling machines to give the perfect finish as well as sourcing and making bespoke products to create the perfect range.

After many months of work, we had several end products.  We then ensured that we ticked all the legal boxes for bringing the range to market.  Many hours of reading British standards later, and extensive lab testing we are proud to offer a range of products that we have put our heart and soul into creating.

So what’s in a Cain Candle?

So now we find ourselves at the beginning of a new chapter of our adventure – launching our first candles to the market, we are nervous, excited, and proud to be at this point.

Every Cain Candle is made in our home in the beautiful Dedham Vale. Every step is done by hand, from measuring, blending and pouring to machining the lids and hot foiling the packaging to shipping. In an age of the mass produced, we are the antidote. We are and will always be a small family business making bespoke artisan candles. It is our passion.

Our candles are 100% organic, ethically sourced, vegan friendly and cruelty free. Every ingredient has been both tested to ensure that it is of the highest quality and the whole supply chain audited for sustainability and compatibility with our brand ethically.

When you receive your Cain Candle, you can expect a beautifully presented candle that is perfectly fragranced and will burn beautifully, fully and evenly for up to 50 hours. The candle glass itself is deliberately not branded to enable you to re-use this either for other candles or for other uses. We firmly believe in minimising waste.

But beyond the ingredients, what really is in every candle that we produce is our passion. Our passion for the craft, our passion for creating beautiful candles, our years of trialling and experience and our love of creating them. That’s what Cain Candles are about, with every candle ordered, we ship out a piece of ourselves and we ship it out with joy.
